Cooling Bandanas for Hot Dogs (Not Heated Dogs)

Summer in the city is a whole thing when you've got a dog. The sidewalk's radiating heat, there's zero shade on your block, and your dog is panting like they just ran a 5K when you've barely made it to the corner.

A cooling bandana is the simplest move you can make. Soak it, wring it, tie it on. It works the way sweat works on you — water evaporates off the fabric, pulls heat away from your dog's body, and buys you a solid 30 to 60 minutes of actual comfort. No batteries, no weird chemicals. Just wet fabric doing its thing.

Why your dog needs one

Dogs cool down by panting. That's basically it. And panting stops working as well when it's humid out — which, if you live in New York between June and September, is every day. Short-nosed breeds, thick-coated dogs, older dogs, and puppies who don't know when to quit are all more likely to overheat. A cooling bandana helps by bringing down the temperature of blood flowing near the skin. It's not a replacement for shade and water, but it makes walks, park time, and outdoor hangs way more manageable.

How to use it

Soak it. Dunk the whole thing in ice water for a minute or two. Colder water = cooler start. A bowl works, a bodega cup works, whatever you've got.

Wring it out. You want damp, not dripping. If it's soaking wet it'll just be heavy and annoying for your dog. If it's barely damp it'll dry out in ten minutes. Find the middle.

Tie it on. Once it's around your dog's neck, air does the rest. Movement and breeze speed up the evaporation, which is what keeps it cool. When the fabric feels warm or dry (usually 30–60 minutes in), re-soak and go again.

Picking the right size

Measure your dog's neck where their collar sits, then add about 2 inches for comfort. Our bandanas come in three sizes: Small (8–12"), Medium (12–16"), and Large (16–20"). It should be snug enough to stay put but loose enough that you can slide two fingers between the bandana and your dog's neck.

Washing and care

Hand wash with mild soap after each use. Skip the bleach and fabric softener — they break down the cooling fibers over time. Air dry fully before you store it. These hold up through dozens of uses if you take care of them, which makes them a better bet than the disposable ones you see everywhere.

Our picks

The Sprinkle Me and Pink Moo'd cooling bandanas use the same high-performance fabric in prints that actually look good. Sprinkle Me is multicolor dots — playful, summer energy. Pink Moo'd is pink with white spots — bold, cute without being precious. Both have adjustable snap closures so they stay on, and they're machine washable on a gentle cycle if hand washing isn't your thing.

FAQ

How long does the cooling last? 30–60 minutes per soak, depending on the heat and humidity. Wetter and windier conditions help it last longer. Re-soak as needed.

Can puppies wear them? Yes, as long as it fits properly and you're keeping an eye on them. Make sure it's not too tight or getting in the way of breathing.

What about sensitive skin? The fabric is OEKO-TEX certified and non-irritating. If you notice any redness, take it off and give their neck a break.

Does it work for cats? Technically, yes — if your cat tolerates wearing anything around their neck. Size accordingly and supervise. Most cats will give you a look and walk away, but some are into it.
